THE Homeschooler's College Corner

Can my child get into a good college if they are homeschooled?

As the number of homeschoolers continues to climb toward 2.5 million and more colleges now provide homeschool-specific guidelines for applicants, higher education has taken on a decidedly favorable attitude towards this population of learners. Most homeschooling families still have questions about the college application process. Learn more about college application requirements for homeschoolers and tips on making a successful transition.

Is it harder for homeschoolers to get into college?

The college admission process is handled very similarly for homeschoolers as it is for traditionally schooled students. In fact, many admissions offices actively seek out homeschoolers. Admissions officers evaluate each student within the context of his/her own background and the opportunities they've had.

Here's a great link that sums up what a homeschooler should know about going to college.

CHECK YOUR COLLEGE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Each university has their own admission requirements. Make sure to research the admission requirements for homeschoolers know the required application deadlines.

While most colleges don't have a separate application for homeschooled students, they may require additional academic information. Families should be prepared to provide a detailed syllabus for each class and explain the grade equivalency. If the classes were not taught by the parent, list the educational provider.  With the right tools, homeschooled students and their parents can craft an application that highlights their strengths and demonstrates the value you will bring to the college you are applying to.

For help with college admission and letter of recommendation, contact the Freedom of Choice school counselor for details.
