As the number of homeschoolers continues to climb toward 2.5 million and more colleges now provide homeschool-specific guidelines for applicants, higher education has taken on a decidedly favorable attitude towards this population of learners. The college admission process is handled very similarly for homeschoolers as it is for traditionally schooled students. In fact, many admissions offices actively seek out homeschoolers. Admissions officers evaluate each student within the context of his/her own background and the opportunities they've had.

While most colleges don't have a separate application for homeschooled students, they may require additional academic information. Families should be prepared to provide a detailed syllabus for each class and explain the grade equivalency. If the classes were not taught by the parent, list the educational provider. With the right tools, homeschooled students and their parents can craft an application that highlights their strengths and demonstrates the value you will bring to the college you are applying to.
