Meet Your School Counselor, Kathy Granite:
Kathy earned a M.S. in School Counseling with a Pupil Personnel Services credential from San Diego State University. Kathy’s educational experience began at The Winston School in Del Mar, CA. where she specialized in working with 7th-12th grade students with diverse learning challenges. From 2014-2021, she was a high school counselor in South Orange Co. While there, Kathy was especially proud of being the lead junior class coordinator, creating and implementing Community College Day for seniors, being the liaison for the EL department, the counselor to a National Merit Scholarship winner (several were also semi-finalists) and being a team lead on the WASC committee. She will never forget the amazing families she worked with and students she helped thrive.
In August 2021, Kathy was let go from her job for not wearing a mask. So, she and her husband, Dan, opened Freedom of Choice School Counseling where she proudly provides school guidance counseling to students in grades K-12. With careful planning, she designed and developed programs specifically to meet the needs of all students in the areas of academic advising, college and career readiness and social-emotional development support. Kathy's goal is that her students gain the knowledge, attitudes and skills to be successful in school and know how to be contributing members of society. Kathy is incredibly thankful to the wonderful San Diego community and all the love and support they've given her to start this new business adventure.
Kathy is married to Dan, a high school administrator and current director of the Freedom of Choice Student Center Homeschool. Both Dan and Kathy are adventurous and like to go on road trips in their travel trailer across the United States. Kathy enjoys anything outdoors, especially spending time at the beach, hiking and more recently, paddle boarding. They both enjoy camping, specifically in Lake Tahoe. Kathy has two adult and thriving children, Jake and Tara. She's also an animal lover and currently has two dogs.
Hello, my name is Dulce Bautista and an experienced teacher. Having earned a BA in Psychology and an MA in Education at Vanguard University, I’m now, a public school teacher of 15 years. I’ve taught ELD students, who were like me, new to this country and knowing little English, but are now, doctors, pastors, entrepreneurs, and engineers. I’ve taught English to grades 1-6 in a private school in the Philippines and English and Filipino to grades 7-12 in the public schools in San Diego.
While at Vanguard, I tutored students younger or older in any subject I’ve taken and helped them understand the reading assignment, organize their notes, prepare for a test, or structure and/or type their essays. Having a daughter, whom I raised with my father’s help, I’ve also experienced being a mother and her first teacher. She, too, graduated with flying colors from college with a bachelor’s in Design.
Much as it took work and endurance to arrive from a wide-eyed teen to my profession today, I must give credit to God, my Creator, who gifted me with words and called me into the teaching ministry without whom, I would have no life or purpose. It is this journey that I hope to share with those, whom I have the privilege of serving and my goal to help develop their unique gifts and discover their special calling.
My name is Grace Reego and I am a UCLA graduate with degrees in Psychology and Entrepreneurship. I spent 5 years on the UCLA Division 1 Women's Water Polo Team, and through that experience learned the mind-body-spirit connection and its vital importance to well-being and quality of life.
In my spare time, I help edit essays of students and feel very competent at guiding young people through challenges, especially young people involved in sports trying to attend college for athletics.
From UCLA, I went to Emperor's College in Santa Monica to pursue my Master's in East Asian Medicine. I have now recently transferred to the San Diego Acupuncture and East Asian Medicine school, Pacific College of Health and Sciences, and am pursuing my Doctorate. I spent several years as an athletic coach and babysitter and have experience working in cafes and at acupuncture clinics.
I am an excellent writer/editor and would be more than happy to help young people with their school and essay needs.
